Supporting Children Through Changes in School Routines
Unexpected changes to the school calendar can bring challenges for families, particularly when children move quickly from classroom learning to home learning and then into an earlier-than-planned school holiday. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, Nick Hart, Principal of Horizon English School, shared insights on how schools and families can support children during this transition.
Nick explained that during periods of uncertainty, helping children feel calm, supported, and connected is essential. Schools are therefore placing a strong focus on wellbeing, recognising that children need emotional stability before they can fully engage with learning.
He also noted that maintaining routine and staying connected with teachers can help provide reassurance for students during times of change. Regular communication, feedback on children’s work, and opportunities for students to interact with their teachers can help maintain a sense of normality while learning takes place away from the classroom.
Nick added that flexibility and understanding are important, as every family’s home situation may be different. By working together and keeping children supported, schools and parents can help them adjust during this unusual period.
