Inclusion and Adjustment: Supporting Children Through Change at Horizon English School
As students return to the classroom following a period of home learning, many families are navigating a mix of emotions and uncertainty. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Jennifer spoke with Anneke Furstenburg, Occupational Therapist at Horizon English School (HES), about how best to support children during this transition.
Anneke highlighted that inclusion is centred on ensuring every child feels safe, valued and able to engage fully in school life. She explained that occupational therapy supports children in building independence through everyday activities, often using play-based approaches to develop key life skills in a natural and engaging way.
Reflecting on the recent disruption, Anneke noted that many children are adjusting to significant change, which may present as anxiety, reluctance to socialise, or difficulty returning to routine. She encouraged parents to give children time to readjust, placing greater emphasis on emotional wellbeing before academic expectations.
She also stressed the importance of routine and predictability, suggesting that simple, consistent family activities can help children feel more secure. Open communication with schools is equally important, allowing parents and teachers to work together to better understand and support each child’s needs.
Reassuring parents, Anneke emphasised that connection at home is key, and encouraged families to be kind to themselves following a challenging period. This conversation offers practical guidance and reassurance, highlighting that with patience and support, children can settle back into school life with confidence.
