Duke of Edinburgh Awards
Horizon English School offers students the Junior Duke and Mini Duke Awards Scheme
The Junior and Mini Duke Awards has been running in primary schools since 2007 and has helped thousands of children aged 5 to 13 to realise their abilities and, for some, to discover new talents and passions. Students can undertake either the Junior Duke or Mini Duke. Levels available:
Mini Duke
Year 1 – Silver
Year 2 – Gold
Junior Duke
Year 3 – Bronze
Year 4 – Silver
Year 5 – Gold
Year 6 – Platinum
Each of the six levels contain fourteen challenges, of which students must complete ten. Challenges include mastering skills such as first aid, ICT, languages, art, drama, music, sport, cookery and puncture repair amongst a variety of cultural experiences. Students are required to commit their own time to completing these challenges outside of school.
Students will grow in confidence, independence, resilience and adaptability when embarking on the challenges within each level. By taking part in the award scheme, students will be better equipped to deal with the everyday problems faced in life.
Students will receive a booklet which costs 100 AED per child. This covers the cost of the booklet, certificate and badge.
Once in secondary school, students can undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, which was set up in 1956 by the late Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip and is designed to challenge young people between the ages of 14-24 to attain standards of achievement and endeavour in a wide variety of active interests – to serve their communities, experience adventure and to develop and learn outside the classroom. It has expanded to 144 nations around the world and is something that Horizon is very proud to be a part of.
