Returning to school after the summer break can bring a mix of excitement, nerves and uncertainty for both children and parents. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer welcomed Hannah Mason, Assistant Principal at Horizon English School, to discuss how families can support children as they settle into a new academic year.

Hannah spoke about the importance of making school transitions as smooth and reassuring as possible, particularly for younger children moving into a new year group, meeting a new teacher or joining a new class. She highlighted the value of strong communication between parents, teachers and children, as well as creating opportunities for pupils to familiarise themselves with their new environment and build connections before the school year begins.

She also shared practical advice for families preparing for the return to school, including gradually reintroducing bedtime and morning routines, speaking positively about school and recognising that some nervousness is completely normal. Hannah encouraged parents to ask more thoughtful questions about their child’s school day, focusing on what made them happy or worried rather than simply asking whether they had a good day.

For the first few weeks of term, Hannah emphasised the importance of prioritising children’s well-being, relationships and sense of belonging before placing too much focus on academics. She also encouraged families to carefully consider the number of extracurricular activities children take on at the start of term, allowing them enough time to adjust to the demands of the school day and their new routine.

This conversation offers parents practical guidance and reassurance to help children approach the new school year with greater confidence, while creating a positive and balanced transition back into the classroom.
