Celebrating Culture and Belonging at Horizon English School
In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Maddison Lewis, Extended Leader and Class Teacher at Horizon English School, about how cultural learning and representation shape confident, inclusive young people.
Maddison described Horizon’s vibrant National Day celebrations, organised with Emirati parents and the Arabic and Islamic teams, featuring traditional food, music, dancing, artwork, and even falcons and camels. Beyond the festivities, she emphasised that these events help children understand the meaning behind the UAE flag, local traditions, and what it means to be part of the country’s diverse community.
She also highlighted the school’s year-round commitment to cultural identity. With students representing many nationalities, Horizon ensures its curriculum is relevant and reflective of every child. Through text choices, project work, and initiatives like Diversity Month, children see their backgrounds represented, encouraging empathy, curiosity and respect. Madison shared a memorable moment when a student felt deeply connected after seeing a Muslim, Pakistani superhero, an example of why representation in learning matters.
The conversation touched on the complexities children may feel growing up between cultures. Maddison encouraged open discussions at home about heritage, roots and family stories, especially during the holidays, as these conversations help children better understand who they are and take pride in their backgrounds.
Horizon English School’s approach makes every child feel included, valued, and connected to the diverse community they are part of, each and every day.
