For many children, the art room is a place of comfort, curiosity and self-expression, and at Horizon English School it is also a space where confidence and creativity grow hand in hand. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Nathalie Gallagher, Head of Art at Horizon English School, about the unique role art plays in helping children understand themselves and the world around them.

Nathalie shared how the classroom environment encourages freedom without judgement, where mistakes are embraced through the school’s “beautiful oops” philosophy, teaching resilience and the value of trying again. She highlighted the joy that comes from collaborative projects where pupils learn to communicate, listen and build something meaningful together. The discussion also explored how styles such as pop art and abstract art resonate deeply with young learners, giving them a chance to express emotions, experiment with techniques and proudly share their thought process behind each piece.

Nathalie also offered thoughtful advice to parents, encouraging them to create simple opportunities for shared creativity at home and to model the same growth mindset their children practise in class. Above all, she advised that every child is an artist in their own way, and through art they learn confidence, communication and the courage to explore.
