Starting School: Finding the Right Fit and Easing the Transition
For many parents, the move to “big school” brings a mix of excitement, pride, and nerves. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Stephanie Nazarian, Assistant Headteacher and Head of Early Years Foundation Stage at Horizon English School, about how both children and parents can prepare for this important transition.
Stephanie advised parents to start exploring schools early, taking their time to understand and find the environment that best fits their child and family. With places filling quickly in Dubai, now is the ideal time to visit campuses and get a real sense of each school. She encouraged families to look beyond brochures and focus instead on relationships, how teachers interact with children and the overall atmosphere of happiness and curiosity within the school.
For those anxious about separation, Stephanie suggested arranging short playdates and having calm, positive discussions to build confidence. She also highlighted Horizon’s “Hopes and Dreams” meetings, which help teachers and parents connect before term starts, easing the transition for everyone.
She reassured parents that early years assessments are play-based, informal, and designed to understand each child as an individual. Her advice was simple: create familiarity, stay relaxed, and trust the process.
