Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Horizon English School is a mainstream school and comes highly recommended for children with special and additional educational needs and disabilities. We are wheelchair friendly and able to offer intensive one-on-one support and an alternative curriculum to children with a wide range of special needs. ‘Which Schools Advisor’ commented that our inclusion provision was “one of the most passionate we’ve come across”.

Horizon also has a dedicated inclusion department and our specialist team includes a School Counsellor, Occupational Therapist, and links with a number of support organisations in the special needs field. We do not require children to be assessed externally to be on our special needs register, but we are happy to provide guidance and recommendations for students who may require additional support in areas such as physiotherapy, speech and language therapy or behavioral support.

New Horizons Programme

As part of our highly personalised curriculum, for children with more complex SEN needs, we offer a daily ‘New Horizons’ class. This is a life-skills based session that offers those children the chance to form friendships and connections, in the safety of a small group.

New Horizons is designed to help children develop their independent living skills through activities like cooking, visiting supermarkets and restaurants, and simple numeracy and communication exercises. The PE department also works across a number of the sessions, guiding the SEN children through physical activities that link to the physical education covered in their year group.

Gifted and Talented

Discover our school's vibrant Gifted and Talented provision, where exceptional students thrive in an environment tailored to their unique abilities. Through specialised programmes based on the children's interests and personalised support, we nurture their talents, encourage their curiosity, and empower them to reach their full potential. Our dedicated teachers foster a culture of creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration, ensuring that every gifted learner receives the guidance and resources they need to excel holistically, both in class through challenging extension activities and out of class through a range of enrichment opportunities.

English Language Learners (ELL)

We offer provisions for pupils with English as a Second Language (ESL), which will be discussed during the admissions process. Upon admission, English Language Learners will undergo the WIDA (World-class Instructional Design and Assessment) Online assessment with the Head of Inclusion. This evaluation helps determine their current level of English language proficiency and identifies the support they need to become confident and excel in both written and spoken English.
